25 Jul Helideck Certification Officers Present at RINA May 2019
Following a request for papers, Chris Wood and Matt Weetch were delighted to fly out to Genoa to present a paper on “Design for Helideck Certification” at the Royal Institute of Naval Architects (RINA) Design & Construction of Super & Mega Yachts Conference May 2019. Both are experienced Senior Helideck Certification Officers with a Royal Navy Maritime Aviation background.
The purpose of their paper was to provide superyacht designers with some valuable guidance on the design of a helideck, such that it can be demonstrated to be “safe by design” as part of the design process. This in turn may be used to support safe helicopter operations and provide a good basis for Certification should it be required at any point during the yacht’s life-time.
As a Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) approved Aviation Inspection Body (AIB), Safeguard Helideck Certification is fully conversant with the international standards and codes required for helideck operations and is well placed to advise on helideck design.
Commenting on their presentation Matt and Chris agreed that: “The Conference paper was very well received with a number of technical questions from the audience who seemed keen to know more. We have since liaised with a couple of well-known superyacht designers to give input to their design process.”
As superyachts continue to grow in both size and complexity, with some boasting fore and aft helidecks, the need for specialist advice at the design stage is crucial and the Safeguard Helideck Certification team are the recognised experts in this field.
