Safeguard Helideck Certification

<p Inspection, Survey & Assessment

Safeguard Helideck Certification is an Aviation Inspection Body (AIB), authorised by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to issue Helicopter Landing Area Certificates (HLAC) for Superyachts that comply with requirements of The Large Commercial Yacht Code (LYC) and The Passenger Yacht Code (PYC).

In order for Safeguard Helideck Certification (SHC) to maintain the responsibility to inspect and certify Superyacht Helidecks globally, we are fully conversant with the following Internationally recognised Standards and Codes:

  • Annex 14 Volume 2 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) – Aerodromes;
  • Civil Aviation Publication (CAP) 437 Standards for Offshore Helicopter Landing Areas;
  • The Large Commercial Yacht Code Chapter 24.2 and Annex 6;
  • The Passenger Yacht Code Chapter 11.2 and Annex 2;
  • The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) 1974.
 

We will…

Review the vessels Helideck Technical Documentation including, but not limited to:

  • General Arrangements – including helideck dimensions and structural considerations;
  • Hangar Arrangements (where applicable);
  • Lift Arrangements (where applicable);
  • Fuelling Arrangements;
  • Structural Fire Protection;
  • Drawings and particulars of fire detection and extinguishing arrangements;
  • Size and Obstacle Protected Surfaces;
  • Helicopter Landing Area Surfaces;
  • Helicopter Landing Area Tie Down Points;
  • Perimeter Safety Net;
  • Access and Egress Points;
  • Visual Aids;
  • Helicopter Landing Area Markings;
  • Obstacle Markings;
  • Operational Data – Reporting and Recording;
  • Staff HLO/HDA Training Documentation.

Visit the Superyacht in order to:

  • Meet the Captain and Crew;
  • Survey the Helicopter Landing Area and Arrangements;
  • Test and Confirm Coefficient of Friction readings;
  • Compile a Compliance Matrix.

Review the following Helideck operational Risk Assessments:

  • Landing and securing;
  • Preparing for take-off and taking off;
  • Unloading passengers, baggage and stores;
  • Refuelling.

Provide the following documentation:

  • A Completed Compliance Matrix;
  • Helicopter Landing Area Report;
  • Helicopter Landing Area Certificate;
  • Determine Helicopter Landing Limitations (HLL) (where appropriate).
